A mermaids purse is a shiny surfaced egg case found amongst the seaweed on the shoreline. They are actually cat-shark and ray cases which are their eggs.

As you walk along the beach, keep your eyes peeled for the twiddly wire-like ends that are on every corner of a mermaids purse. Or you can perhaps look for the polished surface but beware they can easily be mistaken for bits of seaweed.
